💡 Optimizing the Peer Review Process in Your Simulation

Peer review in the simulation offers a valuable, hands-on learning experience for your students. However, to prevent frustration, it is essential that both instructors and students clearly understand how the two progression modes manage the peer review feature.

🚀 Option 1: Self-Paced Progression (Peer Review is Optional)

Select this option if you DO NOT wish to make peer review a required component of your course.

  • Pacing: Students move through the simulation rounds at their own pace.
  • Requirement: Peer review is NOT required for students to advance to the next round.
  • Note on Receiving Reviews:
    • Students may still receive a peer review assignment, even if it is not required for progression.
    • To Skip the Review: If a student receives a review but chooses not to complete it, they must select "Run Simulation" twice when prompted to continue to the next round.

🗓️ Option 2: Calendar-Stepped Progression (Peer Review is Required)

Select this option to mandate peer review and ensure the system can effectively distribute reviews among the class.

  • Action: You must set due dates for any rounds that require video submission. This forces students to submit videos within a specific, timely window.
  • Requirement: Students MUST complete the assigned peer review before they can advance in the simulation.
  • Key Timing Note: Students will NOT receive their assigned peer review until the submission due date has passed. They must return to the simulation after the deadline to complete it.
  • Consequence of Missing the Deadline:
    • If a student does not submit their video by the set deadline, their video will not be available for review by peers.
    • That student will also be ineligible to give or receive peer feedback for that round.

🏃 Option 3: Class-Paced Stepped Progression

This option aims to start peer reviews early if the class completes the work ahead of schedule.

Assignment Timing

The system assigns peer reviews based on class completion:

  • Early Assignment: If all students submit their required video before the due date, peer reviews are assigned immediately.
  • Deadline Assignment: If any students miss the early completion window, peer reviews are assigned after the official due date has passed.

Student Requirement: Because the assignment time is unpredictable, students must periodically check back in the simulation for their peer review assignment, which could appear at any time after their submission.

⚠️ Understanding Why Students May Not Receive Peer Reviews

It's normal for some students to not be assigned a peer review, regardless of your simulation settings. This does not automatically indicate an issue with the system.

Key Reasons for Missing Peer Reviews

The following circumstances prevent the simulation from making a peer review assignment:

  • Odd Number of Students: Peer reviews are typically assigned in pairs or small groups. If the total number of eligible students is odd, one student may not be assigned a match.
  • Missing the Submission Deadline: Students who do not submit their video by the set deadline are ineligible to participate in that round's peer review process (both giving and receiving feedback).
  • Pacing Discrepancy (Self-Paced Mode): The simulation relies on students being in the same round to effectively distribute reviews. Students who are significantly ahead of or behind their peers may not be assigned a peer review.

Setting Strategic Due Dates

When using due dates for rounds requiring peer review, you must structure your course calendar carefully. Students are blocked from moving beyond a round until its due date has passed. Therefore, ensure subsequent due dates are sufficiently spread out to allow students enough time to receive the peer review, complete it, and then advance to the next submission round.

Understanding the Peer Review Progress in your Course

In Simternships that include peer review functionality, you’ll see a Convention Guide in the upper right corner of your gradebook. This quick reference contains an overview of the Peer Review feature, helping you understand student progress at a glance.

Here are the Peer Review statuses you’ll see:

Submitted for Review: This symbol indicates a student has submitted an assignment for peer feedback. You’ll find completed assignments in the Student Results tab of the Instructor Portal.
Assigned to Review: This status appears when a student has been assigned to review another student’s submission.
Completed Review: This status confirms a student has reviewed their assigned submission.

Important: The “Assigned to Review” and “Completed Review” statuses appear in the round in which the peer review was assigned to the student, not necessarily in the round in which the student completed their review. This ensures consistency between the assignment submission and its corresponding review.

Do you need to give your students another attempt? If they missed a submission or didn’t complete an assigned review, you can send them back to a previous round using the rollback functionality.
