Instructors | Understanding the Peer Review function

The peer review process within the simulation can be a great way for your students to have a more hands-on experience, but it can become a source of frustration if the peer review process is not understood correctly. This article is intended to assist in the understanding of how this feature works.

  1. Self-Paced Progression
The self-paced progression option should be selected if you do not wish to implement this function within your course. Students can then move through the simulation at their own pace, and are not required to submit peer reviews.
NOTE: Depending on where students are at in the simulation, they may still receive a peer review, but it is not required for them to move forward, or they can choose to accomplish the review should they choose to do so.
    • If students receive a peer review but do not wish to complete it, they will select “run simulation”, at which point they will be prompted to either complete the review or run simulation again. They will select “run simulation” in the prompt to continue to the next round.

  2.  Calendar-Stepped Progression
In order for the simulation to effectively distribute peer reviews, students must all submit videos in the same round at roughly the same time. With this option you will set due dates for the rounds that require video submission. This ensures that students post videos in that particular round within a specified period.
NOTE: Students will not receive a peer review UNTIL THE DUE DATE HAS PASSED, at which point they will need to return to their simulation and complete the assigned peer review before they can move forward in the simulation.
    • If a student does not submit a video by the due date deadline, that video will not be available for peer review, and the student will be ineligible to give or receive peer feedback.

Class-Paced Stepped Progression
If you choose to use this option, the main difference between this and Calendar-Stepped Progression is that if all students complete the required video BEFORE the due date, peer reviews will be assigned.
• With this being the case, students would need to periodically check back to see if peer reviews have been assigned to them, because they will be assigned before the due date if all video submissions have been completed.
• If all students do not submit before the deadline, then peer reviews will be assigned after the due date.
• The downside to this option is peer review assignment is less precisely timed, and can cause confusion to students.

STUDENTS MAY NOT RECEIVE PEER REVIEWS
It is very important to note that regardless of settings within the simulation, depending on different circumstances some students may not be assigned a peer review. This may be the case if you have an odd number of students, or if some students do not meet the submission deadlines. This is normal behavior and should not immediately be judged as an issue with the simulation.
• If a large number of students are not receiving peer reviews, it is best to double-check your instructor portal to make sure students are in the same round and have successfully submitted videos before the due date for that round.
• If students have not submitted by the due date deadline, they will be ineligible for the peer review process, which can affect how many students receive peer reviews.
• Students must be moving through the simulation at the same pace in order for the simulation to correctly assign peer reviews. When students are ahead or behind their peers in simulation rounds, it is normal to not be assigned a peer review.

Setting Due Dates
You will want to keep in mind how you structure the due dates in your course for peer reviews should you choose to use them. If due dates are used, students will not be able to move beyond that round until the due date has passed. So care must be taken to ensure the due dates in the next rounds are spread out enough to allow a due date to pass and students to provide a review and move forward.
